Melfort reviewing taxi service after residents voice concerns

Sep 23, 2015 | 11:56 AM

Taxi service in Melfort is going under the microscope in response to a number of complaints made to city hall.

“They were making comments, like they would phone (for a taxi) and nobody was answering the phone,” said Mayor Rick Lang.

On Tuesday, a meeting was held between the city and the cab companies. Two of the three taxi services in the city showed up to the meeting.  They were given 12 recommendations to consider, including never insulting or threatening customers.

The taxi companies were also asked to extend their hours of service, guaranteeing at least one taxi would be available from 8 a.m. to 12 a.m. during weekdays, and 8 a.m. to 4 a.m. on weekends.

Mary MacNevin is the Manager of M & M Taxi. She said the meeting definitely brought some valid points into focus.

“I’m in total agreement with the city, we need longer hours for taxis here in Melfort,” said MacNevin, who said they are aware of existing problems.

“There have been times that we’ve been available but our phones get tied up, busy or in a bad service area, or we have just been closed,” MacNevin explained.

The cab companies have been asked by city hall to arrange a meeting amongst themselves and report back within a month.

“They’ll bring us a recommendation, we’ll have to have another look at it and decide if that’s adequate or whether we need to enforce something a little more strict,” said Lang.

Lang said he hopes to have more information in time for the next council meeting on Oct. 19.
