Habitat for Humanity helps family of six stay in community

The Stephenson’s marked a major turning point in their lives after turning the sod on the property of their future home.

Daniel and Allison Stephenson will be the recipients of a new home thanks to Habitat for Humanity.

On Friday, the couple, along with Habitat for Humanity volunteers and dignitaries including MLA Kevin Phillips and Mayor Rick Lang, had a sod turning ceremony on the property.

With the help of supporters, including $65,000 from the Government of Saskatchewan, Habitat for Humanity is able build the Stephenson’s a much needed new home.

With four boys from ages nine to 17, Daniel said the family had outgrown their current home.

“If we didn’t get the place we were actually planning on moving this winter,”

“The house we’re living in is small. The kids are starting to fight in the rooms because they’re crowded,” Daniel said.

Daniel told the media he was on the verge of relocating the family in order to find a higher paying job to pay for a new home.

“My kids, they’ve got their friends. I grew up in a family that moved around and I didn’t get to make good friends. It’s nice that they can actually stay here, finish school with their friends that they started school with,” he said.

Daniel and Allison sent in an application to Habitat for Humanity three months ago after unsuccessfully applying for a loan.

The Stephenson’s were informed that they were the chosen family Thursday night.

“It’s pretty exciting. It’s starting to really sink in for me. It hasn’t really sunk in (for the kids) yet. It’ll be nice when they actually go to the site and help out,” Daniel said.

Within the agreement, the Stephenson’s are required to volunteer a minimum of 500 hours working on the home.

The family will not have to pay a down payment on the home but are required to pay an interest-free mortgage.
