P.A. Police Service looking for new Deputy Chief

Sep 3, 2015 | 6:24 AM

The Prince Albert Police Service has a big spot to fill in their service.

The service is currently going through the process of filling in the role of Deputy Chief after former Deputy Chief, Kelly Steinwand, retired after 27 years of service with the city police.

Steinwand acted as Deputy Chief for the last two years. A job that required him to implement and operationalize new strategies and allocate appropriate resources to the right areas, among other things.

Police Chief Troy Cooper said Steinwand was an essential member of the service that will be missed.

“He provided leadership and mentorship for our senior staff,” Cooper said.

“He was a very professional guy. He was someone that really cared about the service and the community and so replacing him is not going to be easy.”

Steinwand and Cooper worked closely together for many years. In fact, the two attended Police College together before beginning their careers with the P.A. Police Service.

“We spent a lot of time working alongside each other so I know I’m certainly personally going to miss him and miss the contribution that he made to this service,” Cooper said.

The service is currently in the process of interviewing potential candidates for the role. According to Cooper, it makes the most sense to hire internally “simply because to be a good Deputy Chief you have to know the organization intimately.”

“We’re hopeful to find someone who spent time educating themselves. Someone that has proved already that they’re capable of functioning in that capacity and someone who has had experienced all areas of the service,

“They have to know the operations in detail of the whole service to make decisions and to lead staff, so I’m going to be looking for someone with experience.”

Steinwand’s last day was on Aug. 31. He moved to Alberta to be closer to family.

“We wish him well on his retirement and wish him all the success … we just want to thank him for his service and the time he spent in Prince Albert,” Cooper said.
