Back to school safety tips: paramedics

Aug 31, 2015 | 6:26 AM

Whether kids and teachers like it or not, Tuesday, Sept. 1 marks the first day of the 2015-2016 school year.

This means, highways and city streets will be busy with people heading home from vacation and heading back to school and work.

Parkland Ambulance Paramedics want to remind drivers to stay safe.

“Most people do take care – but it never hurts to have that reminder,” said Lyle Karasiuk, director of public affairs for Parkland, in a statement.

Tips for drivers

  • Don’t rush. Give yourself extra time to get where you need to go.
  • Look out for school zones and be sure to slow down.
  • Watch for children and be ready to stop at all times.
  • Be patient. Let children finish crossing the street before continuing on.
  • Stop when directed by a school crossing guard.

Tips for parents and students

  • Plan your drive by choosing the most efficient route to school or the bus stop.
  • At intersections children must learn to stop, look and listen for traffic. It’s also important to walk instead of run and use the buddy system, if possible.
  • At the bus stop sure children should stand far back when waiting and when crossing the street so the driver can see them.
  • For emergencies children should be taught their own address, phone number and how to call 911 for help in an emergency.
