Free UofS soccer matches P.A. bound

Aug 22, 2015 | 7:11 AM

Sept. 5 is going to mean a lot to Dwayne Gareau.

For the first time in his hometown of Prince Albert, Gareau will be playing with the Huskies United Soccer Academy (HUSA) Alumni, the team he won a national championship with in 2011. Gareau, along with HUSA teammate and fellow P.A. product Nathan Reis, will play against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies where they both played their CIS soccer.

The UofS women’s Huskies, which feature P.A. products Erica Parenteau and team captain Meagan Manson, will also be a part of the festivities. They’ll face off against the Whitecaps Boys Academy Team from Saskatoon, the program that produced Brett Levis who’s currently on the Vancouver Whitecaps’ second team in the USL.

Gareau arranged for all this to happen, free of cost for soccer fans, to promote the game but also to give back to the soccer community.

“Having P.A. soccer people have helped me along the way back when I was a youth player,” said Gareau. “Now, I’ve coached a lot of these players and a lot of these athletes that will hopefully be watching and continue to play in it. I’m really excited about it, actually.”

Gareau hopes that the soccer exhibition will also serve as motivation for local youth interested in soccer, showing what can be achieved if they stick with the sport.

“It shows the transition from youth soccer to University soccer and even to men’s soccer if that’s what some of these athletes are looking to do,” said Gareau. “I think it’s a really good event to give younger soccer players goals for some opportunities that are out there.”

The UofS Women’s Huskies will play the Whitecaps Academy at noon, while the UofS Men’s Huskies will do battle against the HUSA Alumni at 2 pm.

Both games will be played at PMP soccer field.
