Heightened security at Saskatoon Cineplex for rap biopic

As rap music enthusiasts flock to the biopic “Straight Outta Compton,” movie-goers can expect more security at Saskatoon’s Cineplex Scotiabank Theatre.

Saskatoon Police confirmed the theatre hired a special duty police officer as a precaution over concerns the film’s gang violence and police harassment themes could trigger violence amid heightened racial tension across the United States.

“Straight Outta Compton” chronicles the history of the landmark rap group N.W.A., including rappers Dr Dre and the late Eazy-E, in Los Angeles. The film premiered as protests in Ferguson, Missouri mark the first anniversary of the fatal shooting of black teenager Michael Brown by a white police officer.

Brown’s death is one of several recent American police killings of unarmed black individuals, and has renewed the debate on race and justice.
