4 Sask. communities break heat records before cold front moves in

Aug 14, 2015 | 7:58 AM

Get ready for a big shift in the weather as the heat wave in Saskatchewan gives way to a strong cold front overnight.

Saskatoon is expected to hit 31C on Friday and Regina is forecasted to reach 33C.

A major swing in temperature (Saturday expected to be 17C in Saskatoon and 24C in Regina) could bring some nasty weather with the possibility of severe thunderstorms later in the day.

James Cummine, meteorologist with Environment Canada,

“The ridge of high pressure that has been dominating the province for the last several days and bringing the unseasonable hot air into the province is finally going to give way to an area of low pressure that will come in overnight (Friday) and in through Saturday, bringing with it rain and much cooler temperatures,” Cummine said.

Record temperatures for southern Saskatchewan for this week are in the low-to-mid thirties.

“It’s happened before,” Cummine said.

However, four communities managed to break records on Thursday:

Leader set a record of 37.5C (previously 37.4C)
Meadow Lake 31.8C (previously 31.7C)
Swift Current 35.7C
Kindersley 35.3C (previously 35C)

Cummine said some communities may break records again on Friday.

Cummine expects eastern Saskatchewan will see the worst of the severe weather. Once the rain pulls out on Saturday, temperatures will rebound to normal summer weather.
