Harvest about to begin

Crops are ripening quickly in the Prince Albert, Shellbrook and Melfort areas, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly crop report.

Cropland topsoil moisture conditions for the Prince Albert area are rated as 13 per cent surplus, 85 per cent adequate and two per cent short.

This compares with one per cent surplus, 63 per cent adequate, and 35 per cent short and one per cent very short for the Shellbrook and Paddockwood areas

Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture in the northeast is rated as six per cent surplus, 93 per cent adequate and one per cent short.

Parts of the region experienced heavy rain this past week, lodging crops and flooding some fields and yards.

The Tisdale area received over five inches of rain.  

Livestock producers have 75 per cent of the hay crop baled or put into silage. An additional 13 per cent is cut and will soon be ready for baling. Hay quality is rated as eight per cent excellent, 75 per cent good and 17 per cent fair.

Pasture conditions are rated as five per cent excellent, 67 per cent good, 24 per cent fair and four per cent poor.
