Corey Chamblin unfazed by job speculation

Aug 5, 2015 | 6:41 AM

As speculation ran wild about his future, head coach Corey Chamblin’s weekend was apparently just like any other.

Chamblin met with the media Tuesday for the first time since a report over the weekend that general manager Brendan Taman was seeking permission to fire him.

“(I handled this weekend) with a laugh,” said Chamblin.

“I didn’t read it. I got all of the texts and all of those things. Like I tell the players and the way I live my life, you can always control what you can control. The decision is always up to those that have the power to make a decision. A decision was made and here we are.”

Chamblin didn’t really think about his employment one way or the other as the talk about his future became louder and louder. Chamblin knows his time with the team will come to an end eventually, just like everyone else in the business.

“At some time, we’re all going to be relieved from our job. Whether that’s through promotion or just getting out of here,” he said.

Chamblin was eventually given a vote of confidence on Monday afternoon. Taman said that everyone in the organization, including himself, supported Chamblin and thought he deserved a chance to turn the season around.

It was an endorsement Chamblin felt he didn’t need.

“It had to be done just to silence (the media) and show the direction of the organization. Those guys had given me a vote of confidence weeks ago.”

What the stamp of approval did do was perhaps put the locker room at ease.

Since the report broke on Saturday, odds are there would be some players who read it and were left wondering just what was going on with the team. Now, they know that their head coach should be here for the rest of the year.

“You can’t not talk about it; it’s the elephant in the room,” said offensive line Chris Best.

“I think (it’s gone now). We got a game to play this week.”

Naturally, the players stand by their coach publicly and are glad he’s here for the rest of the season.

“I love coach (Chamblin). I really hope he sticks around all year and we can win some games for him,” said Best.
