Stewart wins 2nd Northern Men’s Amateur title

David Stewart has been on quite the roll as of late.

He won the Saskatchewan Mid-Amateur tournament last month, and on Monday claimed his second Northern Men’s Amateur title at Cooke Municipal Golf Course.

Soon after stepping off the course, Stewart told reporters it was an awesome feeling to win the tournament twice.

“It’s definitely the hardest tournament to win for us amateurs here in the province because it’s so long and because it’s match play so you don’t know if you’re going to run into a guy that’s going to be playing extremely well,” said Stewart.

The final match-up could have gone either way.

Stewart was up one-up after the front nine.  Denver Grolla responded with an eagle putt on the 11th, before tying up the match.

After 14 holes, the two golfers would be all square.  Stewart would go on to win the 15th, 16th and 17th holes, making a key birdie putt on the 16th.

“He fought hard like I l didn’t think by any means he was out of the match at any point,” said Stewart.

Reflecting back on the back nine, Stewart admitted that he was feeling a bit fatigued from the tournament and had to really focus on keeping his head down and relaxing.

“I just tried to stay in the moment and play as well as I could,” he said.

Stewart said the key to winning a tournament like this is not tiring out and staying hydrated.  He joked that not having too many beers in between rounds can also help.

Stewart, who grew up in Prince Albert, is well acquainted with the rolling greens and traps that Cooke Municipal Golf Course has to offer.  That being said this tournament marked his first time playing the course this year.  He said he felt confident with his game.

“If you’re putting well in these match-play tournaments, it puts a lot of pressure on your opponent.  I knew I was putting really well. That was probably the key. I had a fairly hot putter, I was really confident over the ball and just kind of stuck to that confidence,” said Stewart.

Stewart is booked to play next at the Canadian Mid- Amateur Championships in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia later this month.
