Waskesiu ready to take on long weekend lake goers

Aug 1, 2015 | 8:59 AM

The August long weekend is a popular one for lake goers and this year will be no exception at Waskesiu.

Shannon Bond, communications officer for Prince Albert National Park, said they’ll have lots going on for families to enjoy.

“This weekend is one of our biggest camping weekends and that said, we’ve never turned anyone away so if you haven’t reserved a campsite yet, still come on up,” said Bond.

There will be two annual community dances, put on by the community at Terrace Gardens, beside the Nature Centre.

“It’s a whole lot of fun. On Saturday night they have the Rock and Roll Dance, and that’s music from the ‘60s to the ‘80s, for those of us that remember those genres,” said Bond. “And then Sunday, they have a family dance. It’s the Annual Grey Owl Howl and its family fun for kids. They’ve got games and a whole bunch of other stuff going on.”

Besides the schedule of events, Bond said she encourages families to walk around the park and explore.

“There are lots of little hidden gems in the park that I think people kind of discover by accident,” said Bond.

One of her favourite “hidden gems”, she said, is hiking at the Narrows Peninsula Trail. There, hikers might discover red chairs, which have been popular lately for a fun photo opportunity. If you go, don’t forget to use the hashtag #sharetheshare on twitter.

“There’s a secret picnic sight that a lot of people don’t know about near the Kingsmere rail cart portage,” said Bond. For those that may want to learn more about it, they can stop by the visitors centre and ask for directions.

This weekend will come as a nice relief for the park, which has seen less visitors this year due to the fires.

“We’re definitely starting to see more people hanging out on the beach and in the town site so things are returning to normal,” said Bond. “We’ve had beautiful weather.”

She said foliage has really bloomed from recent rains, and luckily, mosquitos have not returned.

“It’s been one of those rare things that occurred this summer that we can be thankful for,” said Bond, laughing.

“It’s a pretty nice summer right now and the campgrounds have been full the last two weekends.”

Bond wants to remind visitors that the long weekend will be an alcohol free weekend in the campgrounds.

“We do that just to ensure that it’s a family environment, that people are safe and able to have a good time.”
