Sentencing hearing adjourned for accused in Marlene Bird attack

Court was adjourned without a sentence for the man accused of a brutal assault in Prince Albert that left a woman badly burned.

Leslie Black appeared via video link from Regina for his sentencing hearing July 30. 

The Crown is considering whether to pursue labelling Black a dangerous offender.  The assessment has been completed but the Crown has not yet decided how to proceed.

Adam Masiowski, Black’s lawyer, said there were some ethical issues raised within the report that he has to discuss with his client. 

Masiowski told the judge that Black was denying some of the statement of facts, and Masiowski was considering withdrawing as Black’s lawyer if a resolution could not be reached.

The case has been adjourned until August 11.

Masiowski told reporters outside court it could be several months before sentencing takes place.

On April 28, Black pleaded guilty to attempted murder.

Marlene Bird was attacked last summer which resulted in both her legs being amputated and damage to her eyesight. She is still awaiting eye surgery. 

Bird is now living in Timber Bay and was not present in court for the hearing.
