Hoop Performer sparking interest at Ex

It has been a very interesting journey for Sandra Safire, one of the featured performers at this year’s exhibition.

A chance meeting with a fire dancer about nine years ago lit a flame inside her to pursue circus performance.

“She was very casual about it and said oh my friends and I get together and we spin fire. And In my head I thought you just get together and spin fire?,” said Safire.  “And that was it, I was sold right from day one.”

Safire started out very casually and got to a point where people started to ask her to perform at different events. Safire has been able to travel to 15 different countries to perform.

“When you become a performer, you don’t have to be yourself, you can literally be any person you want to be. Even if you are just doing variety performance you can still do it as a character or as an actor,” said Safire.

Safire has several degrees. She has a Bachelor of Arts, as well as a degree in education.  She incorporates her education into all her shows.

“Making a painting is very similar to being creative and making a website; learning how to sell your art work is very similar to learning how to sell your show.  All of these pieces of the puzzle came together in my degrees in ways I’ve never expected,” said Safire.

Safire regularly does shows in schools that are an anti-bullying theme. During these shows she shares her experience of being bullied as a child and how to help students get through that.

“One of the most interesting afternoons was I had a girl in grade eight come up to me after a show and asked me very honestly and openly how did you learn to love yourself.”

Safire said the girl’s comment struck an emotional chord within her.

“For me, that was a pretty pivotal moment to a have this girl recognize that it is something you can learn to do and she had got that from the message of the show. We were able to have a good dialogue and a good conversation outside of the school in a park area about life,” said Safire.

Safire performs daily at the Exhibition at 2:30p.m, 4:30p.m, and 7:30p.m.
