SPCA Board no longer facing vote of confidence

Jul 21, 2015 | 12:23 PM

Prince Albert Mayor Greg Dionne has managed to bring the divided parties of the SPCA together.

Dionne, at the request of the SPCA membership, was brought in to broker a resolution.

“My office received quite a few calls about the dispute going on between the two groups,” he said. “People felt we were a funding agent and I had to explain to them that’s not true, we actually contract our pound service to them.

Members of the SPCA have been very vocal in the past few months about their concerns with the way the SPCA was being managed.

Meetings had been scheduled to take place Aug 10 and 20.  A vote of confidence was to be held at those meetings.

Those meetings have now been cancelled and in their place, an annual general meeting will be called in early September.

The AGM will be an open forum meeting with all discussion to be brought forward at that time including audited financial statements, and board elections.

“I had an opportunity to speak to two groups and I felt there was common ground so then I had a couple of official meetings with both groups and we came up with this resolution,” said Dionne.

Dionne said at the root of the dispute, was simply two groups who felt they each had the best interests of the SPCA in mind.

“That sort of got lost, especially when you get involved in social media, social media you know can get pretty ugly,” said Dionne.

Both the SPCA Board and the SPCA membership have agreed to refrain from further media comments until the AGM.  This includes comments on social media.
