Stewart completes big comeback to win Mid-Amateur, Hobson third at provincials

Prince Albert native David Stewart capped a dramatic comeback defeating Torrie Coghlin on the third hole of a sudden death playoff for the Saskatchewan Men’s Mid-Amateur golf championship.

Stewart erased a 7-shot deficit heading into Friday’s third and final round at Elk Ridge with a 4-under-par-68. The 2007 Provincial Men’s Amateur champion scorched the front-9 with four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 8th hole.

Coghlin, who now plays out of Irondale Alabama rode atop the leaderboard through all three rounds and finished regulation tied with Stewart at 1-over-par-217. Coghlin carded a 2-over-74 in Friday’s third and final round.

Brad Phelps of Saskatoon finished alone in third place, three shots back of the leaders and two shots ahead of Shawn and Ryan McNall, both of Regina, as well as  Kris Carley of Cardiff who set a course record Thrusday with a 7-under-65.

Another highlight of Friday’s final round was a hole-in-one by Cliff Bird of Montreal Lake. He aced par-3-17.

The top eight players have qualified for the Canadian Mid-Amatuer Championships next month in New Glasgow Nova Scotia.

Brooke Hobson of Prince Albert has qualfied for the Canadian Women’s Amateur Golf Championships later this month in Saskatoon. She finished third at the Saskatchewan championships also at Elk Ridge.

Hobson’s final round of 80 left her with a 15-over-par total of 234 through three rounds, one shot behind Regina’s Kim Walker and four shots ahead of Cooke club mate Kayla Sawchuk. Walker had the shot of the tournament Thursday with an albatross (3-under-par) on the par 5-4th hole. Meanwhile, Sawchuk will also likely play in the Nationals.

Anna Young of Saskatoon ran away with the title after carding a 4-under-69 on Friday. Young’s 54-hole total of 9-under-par 210 was 23 shots better than Walker.
