Stewart completes big comeback to win Mid-Amateur, Hobson third at provincials
Prince Albert native David Stewart capped a dramatic comeback defeating Torrie Coghlin on the third hole of a sudden death playoff for the Saskatchewan Men’s Mid-Amateur golf championship.
Stewart erased a 7-shot deficit heading into Friday’s third and final round at Elk Ridge with a 4-under-par-68. The 2007 Provincial Men’s Amateur champion scorched the front-9 with four birdies and an eagle on the par-5 8th hole.
Coghlin, who now plays out of Irondale Alabama rode atop the leaderboard through all three rounds and finished regulation tied with Stewart at 1-over-par-217. Coghlin carded a 2-over-74 in Friday’s third and final round.
Brad Phelps of Saskatoon finished alone in third place, three shots back of the leaders and two shots ahead of Shawn and Ryan McNall, both of Regina, as well as Kris Carley of Cardiff who set a course record Thrusday with a 7-under-65.
