Raiders sign Moe, is third prospect to sign after 2015 draft

Jul 10, 2015 | 6:27 AM

When the Prince Albert Raiders drafted Spencer Moe 28th overall in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft and then signed him on Wednesday to a standard WHL deal, comparisons to Moose Jaw Warrior and Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Brayden Point were inevitable.

Both hail from Calgary and played with the Calgary Bisons Bantam AAA club, were listed at 5’5 in their bantam draft years, drafted by Saskatchewan-based WHL teams and are small but shifty and skilled forwards.

That’s not to say that the Raiders expect Moe to be a Point 2.0, but they ended up drafting a kid that is determined to improve his skillset every day.

“I’ve never had to force the kid out of bed to play hockey,” said Doug Moe, Spencer’s father. “He does hockey in the morning before school with a school program, and then he had another program.

“You just have to walk in his room and say ‘anybody in here want to play hockey?’ and boom, he’s out of bed and goin.’”

With Spencer’s signing, he becomes the third Raiders prospect from the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft to ink a deal. On June 16, the Raiders have agreed to terms with both of their first-round choices in Cole Fonstad (fifth overall) and Carson Miller (21st overall).

Although Fonstad and Miller are both Saskatchewan-based players (Estevan and Yorkton, respectively), Spencer is already very familiar with them through hockey.

“Spencer loves those guys,” said Doug. “He’s played against them in spring hockey in the past and he’s really excited about being able to play with those guys—that he can have guys that are good players to play with.

“He’s hoping they can be a line at some point, the three of them. That’s what he’s looking forward to.”

Although Doug admitted that at first, he wished that Spencer would be drafted somewhere closer to their Calgary home, the family quickly warmed up to Prince Albert once they found out more about it.

Chats with the team’s new general manager, Curtis Hunt, and director of player personnel, Dale Derkatch, also helped ease the Moe family’s minds.

“That’s why he wanted to sign, he wanted to commit to it,” said Doug. “You know the saying, ‘if you’re committed to Plan A, there’s no Plan B.’ That’s where he’s at with it. He’s going for it and he wants to play.”

Spencer did not immediately answer a phone message, but is currently attending the Hockey Alberta U16 Summer Selection Camp July 7-12 in Camrose, Alta., for the U16 Western Canada Challenge Cup.
