Mayor says fire poses ‘serious threat’ to La Ronge

Jul 5, 2015 | 9:22 PM

Heading into a new week, La Ronge’s mayor and Lac La Ronge’s chief continue to provide updates on fires threatening their communities and reiterating the efforts being made to hold back fires.

On Sunday night, Mayor Thomas Sierzycki wrote on Facebook that one fire moved past the La Ronge Airport. However, later in the night, Lac La Ronge Indian Band Chief Tammy Cook-Searson wrote that fire had slowed down due to a bog in the area, though officials still consider it an active fire.

“Heavy helicopters and ground crews are attacking that fire,” Cook-Searson wrote at 11:30 p.m. Sunday night.

To protect the community, sprinkler units were set up in the north end of the Town of La Ronge and Eagle Point, including Dalby, Riese and the sewer treatment facility, Sierzycki wrote.

Up to 40 fire departments have offered assistance and many will be utilized on an ongoing rotation, including monitoring the community for falling embers at all hours.

The tri-community mandatory evacuation order is still in place for La Ronge, Lac La Ronge Indian Band, and the village of Air Ronge.

“We have evacuated approximately 95% of the total population. Approx. total population for our three communities is 7, 100 and 319 people that were evacuated from Grandmother’s Bay, Sucker River, Hall Lake and Stanley Mission. Many other people were stranded due to road closures,” Cook-Searson wrote.

Here is further information on how the communities are taking care of the pets left behind:
