Prince Albert Mayor offers Red Cross full cooperation

Jul 5, 2015 | 3:16 PM

Greg Dionne says the city of Prince Albert will do whatever it can to help the Red Cross and the Province with evacuees.

Over two thousand people were evacuated to the city last week.  Over the weekend, thousands more were bussed down from La Ronge to Prince Albert, before being boarding another bus to Cold Lake, Alberta.

“I’ve been out giving stuffty toys for kids trying to make them comfortable but of course their homes are being threatened,” said Dionne.

Saturday night, the Margo Fournier Centre was used by the Red Cross as an evacuee registration centre.  As well, crews from the Prince Albert Fire Department have been sent up to La Ronge to assist with fighting the fire near the La Ronge airport.

Dionne said the stories from up north are truly heart breaking.  Recently Dionne had a conversation with his friend Audrey Miller, Owner of Wadin Bay Resort.

“They had a sprinkler system on and they ran out of gas and of course they can’t get gas because they have to go to the airport for that. Overnight their compound burned down, destroying their buildings, their ski – doos, their trucks,” said Dionne.

On Sunday, paNOW was told a few cabins had also been destroyed.

Dionne said he Red Cross deserves a lot of credit.

“They have such a large volume now and then to get a large center like La Ronge evacuated to us, you know you have to give hats off to the Red Cross,” said Dionne.

Anyone looking to make a donation for the evacuees can do so at the Salvation Army or Senator Allen Bird Memorial Gym.
