New ultrasound machine offers big benefits for Prince Albert hospital patients

A state-of-the-art ultrasound machine is en route to Victoria Hospital.

The machine, to be used in the diagnostics area, will make life a lot easier for patients and staff.

“Generally in larger patients, visualization of some of the deep structures is limited. With this we are going to get a lot more accurate images and a lot more definitive diagnosis,” said Dr. Cesar Chavarria, head of Radiology at Victoria Hospital.

Chavarria said the higher resolution will be particularly useful for mammography and vascular imaging.

“Certain patients that have the right breast tissue for visualization, we are going to be able to see things a lot better and therefore with larger nodules that are sent for biopsy, that are currently being sent to Saskatoon, we’ll be able to do them in house here in Prince Albert,” he said.

The ultrasound machine costs $169,000.

The Victoria Hospital Foundation applied for funding through the Kinsmen Foundation and Telemiracle, and was approved.

“We are extremely grateful to Telemiracle and the Kinsmen Foundation for their immense generosity,” said Hospital Foundation Executive Director Sherry Buckler in a news release. “Our hospital now will be able to take that next vital step in the right direction for early breast cancer detection in our community.”

Chavarrio said the hospital staff have been looking for this machine for quite some time.

“The biggest thing is when we had equivocal study with ultrasound before and now we can yes, this is a benign renal cyst that you won’t need to go to CT for and so it’s awesome for the people of Prince Albert,” he said.
