Summer likely not bringing relief to dry Saskatchewan

Jun 30, 2015 | 12:24 PM

Saskatchewan’s “weather whiplash” from flooding in 2014 to dryness in 2015 has even Environment Canada’s senior climatologist shaking his head.

On Monday, David Phillips told News Talk Radio‘s MainStreet that while Saskatchewan is getting great beer-drinking weather, it’s likely not the weather people are hoping for.

“But my gosh, it’s not the type of weather you want … you want a nice, slow, drenching, soaking kind of rain,” Phillips said.

It was more than a week ago when Phillips first told News Talk Radio that Regina was seeing the driest year on record. Now, Phillips explained that the Queen City isn’t the only community in Saskatchewan having an exceptionally arid year.

“Let me tell you about Yorkton. Yorkton last year had, in June, had 235 millimetres of rain. It was the wettest month ever. This year they’ve had 22 millimetres of rain – less than a 10th of what they had last year.”

Phillips went on to explain how it’s difficult for places like Regina and Saskatoon to set new records because the records date back to the 1800s. However, the Queen City has seen just 14 millimetres of rain in June 2015, compared to nearly 200 millimetres of rian in June 2014.

“June is your monsoon season – this is where you (usually) get your moisture.”

Phillips said, unfortunately, that July and August aren’t poised to bring Saskatchewan more moisture.

“This ridge, this high-pressure area, is like this weather-free zone and it’s preventing any storms from coming your way.”
