Woman gets 5 years for role in fatal Prince Albert B&E

A Prince Albert judge sentenced a woman who was involved in a break and enter that resulted in a man’s stabbing death to five years in prison on Thursday morning.

Tasia Natewayes, 29, was found guilty of break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence in April, in relation to the 2012 home invasion that led to the killing of Dakota Nayneecassum, 18. She will serve four years and four months, due to time already spent in custody.

Natewayes’ supporters, including her mother and aunt, wiped away tears as Justice A.R. Rothery said a community sentence is not possible.

Her lawyer, Peter Abrametz had argued earlier this month that she is eligible for a community sentence if the judge found that the “indictable offence” being referred to did not involve a serious personal injury.

However, the option of a conditional sentence was struck down by Rothery, who determined Natewayes knew an assault was going to occur.

That night, Natewayes had seen her acquaintances take a silver bat into her car, she was aware they’d masked themselves, and she parked some distance away from the home in Prince Albert’s West Flat the males broke into, Rothery said.

Inside of the house, they attacked Dakota Nayneecassum. He died as a result of blood loss from a stab wound.

Natewayes drove them away after the crime had been committed, and was aware of a strong smell of pepper spray in the car, Rothery said.

She said Natewayes had issues with remorse for her actions, pointing to Natewayes’ statement in her presentence report which says “I feel I was just with the wrong people in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

However, at her sentencing Natewayes said “I regret that night every day of my life,” saying she’s sorry to Nayneecassum’s family and friends.

Despite giving a penitentiary sentence, Rothery acknowledged Natewayes has done much to rehabilitate herself.

This includes seeking treatment for her addictions and successfully completing business administration courses at Northlands College in La Ronge.

Outside court, as Natewayes was escorted to a police transport vehicle, one of her supporters said “phone me.” They held tissues and cried as Natewayes was driven away.
