Selander slugs it out with the best at Cooke

Prince Albert’s Cory Selander proved he can hold his own against the best junior golfers in Canada.

The Cooke Municipal club member tied for the best final round Sunday with 3-under-par-69 to finish tied for fourth at the Golf Canada Future Links event on his home course.

Selander said the third and final round was his best.

“I felt today was a lot better than the first two days. I was able to hit more greens which allowed me to make more pars. The first two days I struggled a little bit and had to make a few doubles (double bogeys) which kind of cost me, but I thought it was a solid tournament for the most part.”

Selander completed the three-round tournament at 3-over-par-219, six shots back of winner Alexander Smith of Calgary. He said it’s comforting to know he can compete with the best junior players from across the country.

“It’s always a good opportunity to see what the competition is like across Canada because here is Saskatchewan it’s a pretty small group of guys we play against every weekend, so it’s nice to say you can stand up against the big boys … it’s nice to be at the top (of the leaderboard)”

The course remained in excellent condition all weekend despite several bouts of heavy rain Saturday and Sunday. Selander paid tribute to the grounds crew who made it a pleasure to compete in a national competition on his home course.

“It’s always fun playing here at Cooke because I have the upper hand against some (out-of-town and out-of-province) guys and I was able to use it to my advantage.”

Prince Albert’s Cory Sawchuk was 2-over-par on Sunday and finished in a tie for 14th at 12-over-par-228 for 54 holes. Zach Hurd of PA recorded a round of 12-over-par on the final day and was tied for 22nd overall at 18-over-par -234. Cooke’s Cole Jenkins also took part in the event.

Alisha Lau of Richmond B.C. won the Ladies championship at 2-over-par-218, one shot better than Delta B.C.’s Mary Parsons. Kayla Sawchuk of Prince Albert was 14th with a three-round score of 35-over-par-251.
