The Harmonized Sales Tax is a big issue in other provinces, but one candidate in Saskatoon's Northwest by-election is trying to make it an issue in Saskatchewan.
The Progressive Conservative's Manny Sonnenschein is calling for what he calls a “fairer” tax, one that many other provinces have moved toward.
“The ostrich approach has been what the NDP and the Sask Party have taken. They figure it may have political losses,” said Sonnenschein.
But the two major party candidates don't believe it's an issue constituents are concerned about.
“Nobody's talking about it at the doors when we go to talk to people and in fact the Minister of Finance has made it perfectly clear that Harmonized Sales Tax isn't on the agenda as far as this government is concerned,” said the Sask Party's Gord Wyant.
“It's certainly not anything that has been brought up on the doorstep with the constituents or their concerns which is our number one priority in this campaign,” added Jan Dycky of the NDP.
The three will face-off against the Green Party's Larissa Shasko and the Liberal's Eric Steiner starting Monday.
