Guhle hopes to crush the combine

May 29, 2015 | 11:24 AM

The best draft eligible prospect of the Prince Albert Raiders will compete with his peers next week in Buffalo, New York.

Defenceman Brendan Guhle will be among more than 100 prospects at the annual NHL draft combine. The week-long event will include personal interviews with scouts and general managers from around the league in addition to a day of grueling physical tests.

The Edmonton-area native improved steadily in his second season with the Raiders as his game really took off after Christmas. The 18-year-old scored the vast majority of five goals and 27 assists last season after Marc Habscheid took over as head coach and earned praise from his bench boss who recently signed on for another four seasons.

“This is a great opportunity for Brendan in the draft process leading up to June,” said Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid. “We wish him the best and know he will represent the Raiders well.”

A product of Sherwood Park, Alta., Guhle was selected third overall by Prince Albert at the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft. The six-foot-two, 185-poud defender won a silver medal with Canada’s Team Pacific at the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. In April, Guhle was ranked 56th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Raiders goalie Nick McBride is also a good bet to get selected during the NHL entry draft June 26-27 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Florida.  The draft stock of centreman Matteo Gennero also rose dramatically during the second half of the season making the 18-year-old Edmonton area boy a late round prospect. Top scorer Reid Gardiner is also eligible for his second straight draft.
