Wildfire forces evacuations near Love

May 25, 2015 | 9:48 AM

The wildfire situation in the province has led to some terrifying moments for people who live in and around Love, Saskatchewan.

A fire burning near the community forced a number of people to evacuate on Saturday afternoon.

A woman who owns a farm about two miles outside of the town says she was warned on Friday night to have her bags packed, and to be ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice. On Saturday afternoon, she was told the area was no longer safe, and she would have to leave immediately.

“We didn’t think it was that close. We were watching the water bombers, flying really low over us, and that was pretty neat, and then all of the sudden, ‘Whoa!’ The flames are right there,” Susan Kreutzwieser said.

She said ashes were falling on her property when fire crews showed up. Fire fighters set up sprinklers on her house to try to fight off any embers that might be blowing through the air.

“So we went and got the vehicles, and when we got to the end of the drive way … we looked down at the end of the road, and the fire was starting there, so we had to go across the field.”

Kreutzwieser said she had one thing going through her mind at that point, “Will we get out?”

Fortunately, they did.

As of Monday morning, the fire still had not been contained.
