Update: Man sentenced to prison in connection to Shoal Lake homicide

Royce Virgil Bear is going to be spending the next five years and 10 months in prison in relation to a homicide on the Shoal Lake Reserve.

In late November of 2009, Bear struck 24-year-old Raynant Stanley Kitchener in the head with a two-by-four-board following a dispute, killing him.

Bear, 28, was sentenced to eight and a half years minus credit for time already served.

Crown prosecutor, Thomas Healey, said even though he was seeking a 10-year sentence, he is pleased with the result.

“In this case, that at the end of it, justice was done. The court heard the evidence and made a decision that they felt was appropriate, and the Crown was satisfied with that,” said Healey.

Bear also pleaded guilty to assaulting another victim with a weapon, in which he received a one-year sentence to be served concurrently.

Along with his prison term, Bear has a 10-year firearm ban and has to give a DNA sample.
