Johns Garden and Gift Centre open for the season

May 8, 2015 | 8:20 AM

Get your green thumb out.

Spring is here and gardening season has begun, which means Johns Garden and Gift Centre is now open for business just in time for Mother’s Day. Garden enthusiasts can purchase a variety of annual bedding plants, tropical, perennials, hanging plants and bulk soils and landscape supplies.

Today, Johns Garden and Gift Centre is operating out of a temporary greenhouse at its new 40th Street East location, however plans are still in the works to change that. Owners Debbra Graham and Debbie LaHaye said they hope to finalize the plans and rebuild the greenhouse and garden centre that was destroyed by arson in 2012.

Before the fire, Johns Garden and Gift Centre built a reputation for being the best place in town to shop for anything garden-related. The business’ 9,000 square foot greenhouse was stocked throughout the summer with a variety of colourful bedding plants, bloom-filled pots, planters and hanging baskets. The gift centre was stocked with a variety of statuary and fountains for indoor and outdoor use, a variety of candles, soaps and lotions, plus an array of other giftware.

Although the final outcome for the new greenhouse and garden centre is still unknown, it is hoped things will align in the coming months so Johns Garden & Gift Centre can begin operating as a year-round business once more. It is anticipated that the new potential 7,200 square foot greenhouse and 4,200 square foot garden centre that Graham and LaHaye hope to build will once again carry Prince Albert’s largest variety of seeds, bulbs, hanging plants, landscaping supplies and other gardening favorites. Next year, Prince Albert residents may also be able to once again enjoy the garden centre’s annual Christmas sale.

For now, local gardeners can expect the greenhouse to remain open for at least the season. Business hours are 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday to Saturday and 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. on Sundays.
