Group encourages city to ‘rise up’ against violence

May 5, 2015 | 7:09 AM

The recent deaths of a 64-year-old woman in Prince Albert and of a mother and her three children in Tisdale are among the events that have prompted a local group to take action.

Rise Up-Prince Albert is organizing a week full of activities aimed at creating awareness about violence against women.

Organizer Conrad Burns said a lot of people don’t realize the damage a violent relationship can cause.

“Sometimes people self-medicate, sometimes they self-harm, they deal with it in different ways and so if we educate people and they can understand why, there will be less ignorance out there,” said Burns.

The week of May 25 will include a self-defense seminar, and school presentations.

“A survivor of abuse will talk about her story and we’re getting someone in from the health region to talk about the effects of abuse on an individual.”

The week will be capped off with a concert on May 30. The list of acts is still being finalized.

“We are currently in the process of talking with Buffy Sainte-Marie, she’s just finishing up a concert in Texas and if she can work it that she might come up to Prince Albert. Charlie Major has already show some interest in coming to Prince Albert,” said organizer Conrad Burns.

Burns said Liberal leader Justin Trudeau has also expressed interest in coming.

The next step for organizers is fundraising.  They need to raise the money to bring in the big acts and cover expenses.

Interested parties can contact Patricia Crowe by phone at (306) 961-9686 or by email at pcrowe@sasktel.net.

The group is hoping to raise $40,000.

Burns said he is hoping the idea catches on and they can make this an annual event.

“You have to continue to press the subject to create change, so if we do it once now, we’ve got to continue to do it and encourage people to realize women are special, they are important and we have to treat them with the importance they deserve.”
