Lobsterfest lends support to Nepal earthquake survivors

May 3, 2015 | 12:01 PM

An annual seafood feast held by Prince Albert’s Rotary Club is this year helping to provide shelter for those left homeless by the earthquake in Nepal.

Funds raised by the 10th Annual Rotary Lobsterfest will not only help the Rotary Club, but some of the proceeds from the event will go towards purchasing shelter boxes for the earthquake survivors.

To help raise awareness about shelter boxes, there was one put on display in the Kinsmen Room.

“It’s about 14 feet square, it comes packed into a little bag  and a little box compete with a stove, some cooking utensils, the ability for them to chop wood, so there’s an axe — just the basic human necessities,” said Lyle Karasiuk, the ShelterBox Ambassador for Prince Albert.

The shelter boxes also come equipped with a water purification kit.

Karasiuk says the disaster in Nepal is having an impact around the world and he was very glad to hear the Rotary club wanted to help out.

Anyone who did not make it out to the event and wants to contribute can still do so.

“They can log on to ShelterBox Canada … purchase one there or in the coming weeks, months ahead of time when they are simply looking at their computer and thinking ‘gee, we’ve got some extra money, we’d like to make a donation’,” said Karasiuk.

The shelter boxes are stored in a large warehouse in Sussex, England.   As per need requires, the shelter boxes are shipped from there to countries that need them.

Shelter boxes have already been provided to four hospitals in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Nearly three million people were displaced by last weekend’s earthquake.
