P.A. trial set for alleged shooter

Apr 28, 2015 | 6:45 AM

The case of a man who was the subject of a post-shooting manhunt in Prince Albert is heading to trial.

Prince Albert Police Service (PAPS) were on the trail of Brett Alexander Coombes, 23, for months after a man was shot during what police suspected was a botched robbery on Feb. 1, 2014.

Coombes allegedly knew the man being robbed. That victim was shot in the upper chest in a home on the 1000 block of First Street East, and his injuries were believed to be non-life threatening at the time.

The shooter got away before police arrived.

Days after the shooting, police executed a home search, where three men connected to Coombes were arrested and questioned about his whereabouts.

Two months later, on May 26, 2014, police arrested Coombes during a traffic stop.

He faced nine charges at the time.

However, his Dec. 14 to 18 trial is for seven charges.

Coombes will be tried for aggravated assault, discharging a firearm with intent, possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of a firearm while prohibited, being at large, and two breaches of a recognizance.

The trial will take place at the Prince Albert Court of Queen’s Bench.

Before the shooting, Coombes had been out on bail in Prince Albert.

He was also one of three men arrested and charged in August 2013 following a cocaine bust in the unit block of 13th Street West. Police seized 84 individual packages of cocaine, prepared for sale and more than $2,000.

At that time, police said Coombes had ties in Edmonton.
