Heritage awards looking for nominees

Mar 25, 2011 | 11:48 AM

The deadline for the city’s Municipal Heritage Award has been extended in order to get more nominations from the community.

The award is designed to recognize older properties in the city that have been preserved or have been renovated in a way to show off the building while still remaining useful.

City planner Wes Holowachuk said is about recognizing the effort of people who’ve put work into important buildings that are part of the city’s heritage.

“It’s basically just to promote the heritage work that is being done and the effort that people go to above and beyond our standard regulations to preserve that property and appreciate the heritage behind it,” he said.

Holowchuk added that city will accept nominations for just about every type of property form a busy downtown business to small turn-of-the-century home as long as the owners have been working towards preserving it.

Past winners have included Wilxoc, Zuk, Chovin Law Office, Hesje Cabinets, the Prince Albert Heritage Museum and 302 20th St. W.

The deadline for nominations has been extended to Apr. 15. Once nominations are received, a committee will decide on the winner and make a presentation in the summer.
