Festival of 10 minute plays in Saskatoon

Apr 18, 2015 | 3:54 PM

Some small plays are hoping to attract a big audience in Saskatoon.

The Short Cuts festival features six 10-minute plays performed back-to-back.

“If you don’t like the play that you’re watching, wait 10 minutes and it’s a brand new play,” Hardly Art Theatre artistic director Yvette Nolan said with a laugh.

Nolan also directed one of the plays in Short Cuts. She said they put a call out for scripts last summer and had submissions from across North America.

A team of actors, directors and designers spent two weeks rehearsing the plays.

“I love the 10 minute form because you have to be so precise. It’s one idea, one world, one set and you have to carry it off in 10 minutes,” Nolan said.

This is the second year for the event which runs Friday and Saturday night at 8 p.m. and Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at The Refinery. Tickets are available at the door or online.

Nolan said it caters well to those with short attention spans as well as people who like variety.

“It might have to do with we haven’t got the same kind of attention span,” she said. “We don’t want to invest for two hours in one story, but this way, you’re invested in six stories, one after the other.”

The actors featured in the plays are Jenna-Lee Hyde, Lia Gomez, Cynthia Dyck, Isaac Ruot, and Bruce Mckaywill all from Saskatoon, Eli Ham from Stratford and Sera-Lys McArthur from New York City.

The directors for the six plays are Joshua Beaudry, Yvette Nolan, Danielle Spilchen, Andrew Johnston, Anita Smith, and Philip Adams.

The plays are:

Litany by Anthony McMahon
• Two ex-partners meet at a funeral and are forced to acknowledge the love they once shared.

Knead by Lauren Holfeuer
• While making bread two friends discover something unexpected about the guy they are both keen on.

Runners High by Donna Hoke
• A world class runner from Ghana, talks through his new life in the new world with his new coach.

2 Indians by Falen Johnson
• A couple of women sitting in an alley give us their comic insight into the politics of the day.

Slick Dame by Kay Poiro
• What does a private detective do with a dame who shows up with a great deal of money asking him to do a very dangerous thing?

Baggage by Joel Bernbaum
• What are the chances of meeting someone on an 18-hour plane ride that you end up kissing?
