A Grade 12 student in Prince Albert is the third in Canada in her weight class.

Carlton Comprehensive High School’s Eden McPherson took bronze in her 68-kilogram weight class.

McPherson has been involving with wrestling for about four years.  She was involved with judo when she was in elementary school and realized a lot of the skills transfer over.

“When I was in judo one of the girls on the provincial team was a wrestler as well and she told me about it, then I realized judo and wrestling are alike so it got me interested. Then in Grade 9 I gave it a try and liked it so I stuck with it,” she said.

Through her years of wrestling McPherson has been influenced by a lot of different people, but two has had a large impact on her.

“One wrestler who had an impact on me was Brock Munro. In my grade nine year he was the team captain and he supported me to keep wrestling. A coach who had a big impact on me was Kevin Lavallee he was my coach throughout my high school career, and he had helped me improve little by little to where I am right now,” McPherson said.

McPherson had an undefeated high school season, placed first at provincials and wanted to continue her success at nationals.

“When I went into nationals my major goal was to place top three. Once I achieved that goal I was excited, and I was quite proud of myself for my first nationals I finished third out of everyone in my weight category,” she said.

After high school McPherson would like to further her wrestling career to the next level.

“I’m thinking about going to university, I haven’t decided which one I’m going to go to yet since it’s such a big decision, but I do want to continue wrestling,” she said.
