Mustangs take 2-1 lead over Nipawin after crazy OT win

Tristan Frei scored four goals and six points in the Melfort Mustangs’ 7-6 overtime thriller over the Nipawin Hawks in Melfort on Tuesday. The win gives the Mustangs a 2-1 playoff series lead. The winner of the series will play in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League finals, and play the winner of the Kindersley Klippers-Notre Dame Hounds series.

Frei scored the overtime winner in a minute into the first overtime period, giving him nine goals and 15 points in eight playoff games. Travis Mayan had five assists. Mustangs forward Justin Boyer, one of nine former Prince Albert Mintos on the team, had three helpers in the game.

The Mustangs had a 4-0 lead after the first and extended the lead to 5-0 23 seconds into the second period, but the Hawks got back into the game with five consecutive goals in the second period and trailed 6-5 heading into the third.

Hawks forward Chase Thudium tied the game in the third, before Frei ended it early in extra time.
