Sask. to ban teens from tanning beds

Mar 30, 2015 | 11:22 AM

Following the lead of every other province in Canada, Saskatchewan’s government will develop regulations to ban minors from indoor tanning.

On Monday, the province announced regulations against indoor tanning for those under 18 years of age. Those regulations are expected to be finalized by summer 2015.

In a news release, Dustin Duncan, minister of health, said the government wants to protect Saskatchewan residents’ health.

“Our young people are particularly vulnerable to the effects of indoor tanning, and this is one way we can help them lower their risk of melanoma.”

Duncan said Saskatchewan’s regulations will be written with other jurisdictions’ experiences in mind.

Prompted by Alberta’s decision to implement a similar ban, when Premier Brad Wall was asked about tanning beds last week, he said the government was still reviewing the options.

The province said the development of indoor tanning regulations will include opportunities for consultation with interested stakeholders.
