Beardy’s G-Man undefeated in 1-day Leafs contract

Mar 29, 2015 | 12:05 PM

An 11-year-old from Beardy’s-Okemasis First Nation has an undefeated record as a Toronto Maple Leaf after the team’s Saturday night overtime win.

That statement came from hat-trick-scoring Leaf Tyler Bozak in a post-game interview while guiding Garrett (G-Man) Gamble onto the ice in his wheelchair. It’s also shown on the Leaf’s website, under Gamble, #42’s, player bio.

On Thursday, Gamble signed a one-day contract with the team thanks to the Children’s Wish Foundation and not soon after he was in Toronto with his family.

They watched his favourite team practice, and afterwards fist bumped the likes of team captain Dion Phaneuf, among others.

“It’s nice to have him in the room, and to be able to have him experience this day. I think it’s special for him and his family. To have him around, he came into the room this morning, spent some time with the day,” Phaneuf told reporters after that practice.

In the midst of a tough run for the Leafs, Phaneuf said Gamble’s struggles put things into perspective.

“We want him to enjoy this day. As players we want to accept him into the room and make sure that he really enjoys it.”

Efforts to make Gamble comfortable were present throughout the day.

His family posed for a photo in the locker room, where Gamble not only had his own cubby and swag, but his own autographed Number 42 jersey with “G-MAN” written on the back.

Gamble, #42, was introduced in style at the Air Canada Centre before the game, as fellow Saskatchewan product Wendel Clark took him for a lap around the ice.

The 4-3 overtime win was icing on the cake for Gamble. After he received the first star for his role in the puck drop and was brought onto the ice by Bozak, Gamble said it was “a great day.”

In a scrum following the game, Gamble said “I always wanted to be the first star. Forever.”

A reporter asked what his favourite part of the day was.

“Tyler Bozak scored the hat trick,” Gamble responded.

He also said his family was more excited than him for the day, and acknowledged his role in inspiring the team.
