Lakeland snowmobilers declare season over

People don’t often wish the sun away, but the heat was too much for the Lakeland Vintage Races as they had to close down early on the weekend.

Ice thickness on Christopher Lake remained strong both Saturday and Sunday, but in preparing the track for the oval races on Sunday people noticed things were too slushy to go ahead.

“You get the hydroplaning, then you get the ruts in the track and it’s just too dangerous,” said Carol Lueken, secretary of the Lakeland Tree Dodgers snowmobile club.

This weekend was “probably the last kick at the cat for” snowmobilers who had a “very short season” in the Lakelands, she said.
