Fire relocates classes

Mar 21, 2011 | 9:52 AM

About 400 First Nations University students in Prince Albert are dealing with an adjustment in their classes this morning.

A fire at the second campus site on 11th Street East on Sunday caused smoke damage to a classroom.

All classes are now being held at the main campus on Central Avenue for the time being.

Repairs and clean up from the smoke damage is likely to take a couple weeks, said Janna McTavish, executive assistant for the First Nations University Northern Campus.

While the cause of the fire has yet to be released, investigators were on site this morning.

They are still learning the details and at this time they don’t know a whole lot, McTavish said.

“I do know there was a fire in the building where our classroom is so as far as I know our site was not directly affected by the flames but there is some smoke damage,” McTavish said.

“We haven’t heard a whole lot of the extent of the damage. We don’t know how long it’s going to take even to clean up. It will, I’m sure, be several weeks.”

McTavish said she doesn’t believe there will be a lot of restructuring needed for their second campus, but there will be a lot of clean up need.

The second campus site served as a classroom for students, who have all been merged into a new classroom schedule at the main site.

Combining all classes in one location shouldn’t be too much of a strain on students and teachers, McTavish said.

“We definitely have the space here. Obviously that second site was needed to accommodate the students but we’ve been able to pull it all together here … we’re confident that things will run very smoothly.”
