Beardy’s band members hit hard by toddler’s death

Chief Rick Gamble, of Beardy’s Okemasis First Nation, says the tragic accidental death of a three-year-old boy has hit the community very hard.

Paramedics were called to a residence on the First Nation on Tuesday night.

“The little guy apparently loved to climb, and that’s what the grandmother was telling us at the office the other day. It just so happened that he was climbing, and somehow he fell off and the TV fell on top of him,” said Gamble.

Gamble said the parents should not be held responsible.

“The parents are very responsible people, one of them for works for us, and they have always been very good, open-minded parents and supportive so they are taking it very, very hard and so is the community,” said Gamble.

The First Nation, located near Duck Lake, has been dealt its fair share of tragedies of late.  A total of six people have died on the reserve in just under two weeks. All but the boy’s death were the result of natural causes.

“We’ve reached out to our elders as we usually do in these types of situations and we’re having a pipe ceremony tonight, followed by a candlelight vigil,” said Gamble.

The community is also planning to host a feast over the weekend.
