Rebels rally past Raiders 5-3

Feb 28, 2015 | 12:03 AM

The Red Deer Rebels scored back-to-back power-play goals just 46 seconds apart in the second period and that proved to be the difference in a 5-3 win over the Prince Albert Raiders at the Enmax Centrium on Friday.

The Rebels broke open a 1-1 game when Scott Feser’s backhand shot from the slot after a partially blocked shot from the point fluttered into the bottom corner before rookie Josh Mahura’s slap shot from the point found its way through traffic and into the top corner. Assistant coach Kelly Guard told the 900 CKBI post game show audience that Raiders goalie Nick McBride was shaky on both of those goals.

The Rebels built a 4-1 lead when Raiders rookie Luke Coleman chipped a Brendan Guhle pass into the top corner for his first WHL goal with just over six minutes remaining in the second period. The 16-year-old from Red Deer got his first WHL goal in front of family and friends.

The Raiders had a few more opportunities late in the middle frame including Jayden Hart’s shot moments after the Coleman goal on a 3-on-1 break that barely missed the open corner. It was Hart’s first game back after missing 11 with an upper body injury.

The Raiders dominated much of the third period and were rewarded on Jesse Lees power-play blast from the mid-point on a Prince Albert power play at 6:03. However, despite considerable time in the Rebel zone, they could not count the tying goal and Riley Sheen iced the game into an empty net at 19:53.

The Raiders outshot Red Deer 29-24 overall and 11-5 in the third period. Guard wasn’t happy with their effort in the first two periods and said you aren’t going to win many games with uninspired play for the first 40 minutes.

In addition to Coleman’s goal, another bright spot was the power play which went 2-4 against the third-ranked penalty kill in the WHL and second best at home. The loss leaves the Raiders 11 points behind the Oil Kings for the final Eastern conference playoff spot heading into Sunday’s showdown in Edmonton to open a home-and-home series.
