Man responsible for gun incident won’t serve jail time

A man has been sentenced for his connection to an incident where a rifle was shot at a crowd of people attempting to smash the windows of a Pelican Narrows home last summer.

Travis Alphonse Sewap, 30, received a 15-month conditional sentence for assaulting three people with a 22 calibre rifle, and another six months that he’ll serve at the same time.

He was arrested and charged with assault with a weapon against three people, firing a rifle, and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public on June. 14, 2014.

At the time, Pelican Narrows RCMP reported that two young teens from Flin Flon and a 19-year-old Pelican Narrows man in that crowd of about 20 were shot and injured in the early morning hours.

At first RCMP believed only one man exited a home and shot a rifle at a crowd of people who were attempting to smash windows.

However, later RCMP laid charges implicating Scott Donald Roberts, 22, in the incident. He was arrested on five weapons-related charges, including discharging a weapon weeks after the incident.

This week, Judge I.J. Cardinal out of Pelican Narrows Cree Court found that imprisoning Sewap within the northern Saskatchewan community will not pose a danger to community safety.

Sewap must abide by a long list of conditions. This includes living at an approved residence, remaining at home between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m., staying away from liquor and drugs and having no contact with certain people. He also face weapons prohibitions, and needs permission to leave Saskatchewan.
