Prince Albert airport to receive new weather station

Jan 21, 2015 | 6:51 AM

The federal government is looking to improve the quality of weather forecasts and warnings, and is putting $134 million towards that effort.

Prince Albert will see some impact from the announcement:  a new weather station at the Prince Albert Municipal Airport.

According to statement from Environment Canada, the climate station will collect information such as daily highs and lows, precipitation, and wind data. This information will be used to better predict long-term weather trends. The data will also be used to represent an official climate record for the area.

“It’ll be like a 30 by 30 fenced compound, and it will have an array of sensors in it,” said Airport Manager Corey Nygaard.

He said the weather station is not related to the airport and air traffic. The airport already has a system in place to assist pilots.

“It’s a benefit to Canada in general and our local community,” said Nygaard.

Construction will likely start in the spring. On Monday night, Prince Albert city council approved the licensing agreement. The City will rent out land for the station.

Environment Canada says it has for the past decade planned investment of infrastructure for this site, but now was seen as the opportune time to proceed.
