Women’s Hall of Fame looking for nominations

Jan 14, 2015 | 3:53 PM

Once again Prince Albert’s Council of Women is seeking nominations for their annual Women’s Hall of Fame.

Chrissy Halliday, president of the council, said this is a way to recognize women in the community who volunteer and give back.

Last year’s inductee was Carole Sanderson, who is known for her contribution to the education field and First Nations people.

Sanderson passed away in August of 2013 and her dedication to education made her a prime candidate for the Hall of Fame.

Halliday said the Hall of Fame is held in conjunction with International Women’s Day on March 8.

“[This] is an opportunity us, as the Council of Women, to honour a woman in our community who has benefitted the community in some way, it can be through sports, culture, recreation, multiculturalism and it can be helping at a social level, anything like that,” Halliday said.

Every year the council has a theme, which goes along with the United Nations (UN) theme.

This year the UN theme is “Equality for women is progress for all.”

The Province of Saskatchewan also celebrates International Women’s Day with this year’s theme being “Influential Women: Agents of Change.”

The Government of Canada’s theme for this year is “Strong Women. Strong Canada.”

When talking about the importance of recognizing women in the community Halliday said, “I think the biggest thing is that women are not really good at talking about their accomplishments.”

“I know [women], even myself, don’t look at it as we’re doing all these things, or helping all these people. I don’t think that we give ourselves, personally, enough credit, so this is an opportunity for somebody to say ‘this person does all of this for us it’s time to recognize them.’”

The nomination deadline is Feb 9.

Nominations can be made by called Halliday at 306-961-0213 or through her email at crystal_halliday@hotmail.com

Nominations can also be made by calling Rose Rothenburger at 306-961-8410 or through her email at rose.r@sasktel.net

The Hall of Fame ceremony will be held on March 8.

Past inductees include Dr. Lalita Malhotra, who has worked locally and internationally on women’s health care and Rhonda Meakin who works with the Prince Albert Police Service.
