Wesmor donates winter warmth

A Wesmor High School staff member knows the potential recipients of a generous Prince Albert campaign well – she helps them in school every day.

Nadine Loucks, an educational associate at Wesmor, said her passion for helping youth compelled her to join the Wrapped up for the Holidays fundraiser.

“There are so many young people that we know of who are out in the cold for one reason or another,” she said. “I even know some of our students who are couch surfers per say and sometimes they’re sleeping on the streets.”

Loucks coordinated an effort within the school to become a part of the campaign.

“I just thought well there (are) over 30 of us on staff and if each one of us gave a blanket, we’d have quite a few blankets,” she said.

On the 17th, Wesmor Public High School staff dropped off three large garbage bags full of blankets and jackets for the Wrapped up for the Holidays campaign.

Working at a high school located in the west end of the city can be challenging because Loucks said they get a lot of negative attention. Loucks hopes this donation will aid in changing how people perceive the school.

“(We’re) no different than any other high school, right, but because were in the west side and west end we have quite a bad rap and were trying to change that,” she said.

Around 13 students in the Life Skills classroom also took part in the donation in a unique way. According to Loucks the students sewed a quilt with the help of Gisele Neudorf, Susan Stobbs and Paula West-Bates.

“They had this idea that instead of just giving any blanket, to teach the life skills about giving and so on that they would have them sew one instead of just giving one,” she said.

In January, any donations collected will be handed out to organizations in Prince Albert.

The fifth annual Wrapped up for the Holidays campaign is still accepting donations from the community.

The drop off locations are at either of Parkland Ambulance’s two locations, in front of the food court at the Gateway Mall or at CTV Prince Albert.
