Missing 76-year-old Bengough man’s body found

RCMP made a sad discovery in the search for a missing Bengough senior who hadn’t been seen since Saturday.

Late Monday, the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team determined that something was under the surface of the water near the Willows Dam at Assiniboia. They had been searching the area looking for 76-year-old John Rustad.

Rustad left his Bengough home Saturday morning and told his family he was going ice fishing at the site east of Assiniboia. He hadn’t been seen or heard from since.

On Tuesday, the underwater team recovered Rustad’s body from under the ice, along with the body of the man’s small dog.

Rustad’s truck was also found under the ice. RCMP say the truck is about 10 feet from the shore near the pump house where the ice was about 12 inches thick. The water was three metres deep.
