Special event aims to stuff the food bank’s shelves

Holiday spirit will reach a fever pitch on Wednesday at the Prince Albert Co-op.

Mix 101FM is hosting its first-ever “ballbreaker” event at the store on 15th Street East.

Proceeds from the promotion will go to the Prince Albert Share-A-Meal Food Bank.

“We’re part of the community and this time of year you think about family, and friends,” said Co-op general manager Dave Marchant.

The public is encouraged to donate food or cash. The store has also assembled its own bags of non-perishable food items and cases of soup. Those are available for purchase for either $10 or $20.

“For each one of the bags or case loads of soup purchased, we’ll be donating an extra $2 in cash,” said Marchant.

Also this month, Potash Corp. will match all monetary donations made to food banks.

“We’re actually bringing a one-ton truck down there and some pallets, and so it would certainly be nice to be able to fill it,” said Marchant.

Christmas time is one of the busiest and most stressful for the food bank. According to co-manager Wes Clarke, they expect to see even more traffic this year.

“We’ve almost doubled in the past two years and this summer hit us really hard,” he said.

When asked what might be behind the sudden increase, Clarke said one reason was the cost of housing.

“We have quite high rents in this town. Sometimes unfortunately people have to make that choice, are you going to pay your rent or are you going to eat this month,” said Clarke.

The ballbreaker promotion runs Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Anyone who donates food or cash will have a chance to win a prize.
