Sunday marks start of Agricultural Safety Week

Safety on the farm is taking centre stage with Agricultural Safety Week, beginning Sunday.

Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Bob Bjornerud believes it's an important thing for farmers and ranchers to hear as the busy spring season approaches.

“We know that they're going to be putting in long hours. They're going to really be rushed to get this crop in this spring. And the same on the livestock side, with calving and that, you're busy out there,” said Bjornerud.

“We're just trying to remind farmers to be prepared and work safely, right across the whole summer.”

While farm fatalities across Canada have been gradually falling since 1990, the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association says about 100 people die every year on the nation's farms. 70 per cent of those deaths happen from May to October.
