Raiders crown Kings, run win streak to four

Nov 25, 2014 | 11:37 PM

The Prince Albert Raiders have now won a season high four straight games and are full value for a 4-3 win over the defending Memorial Cup champion Oil Kings in Edmonton.

It was also a big night for some Edmonton area boys in the Raider lineup.

Matteo Gennaro scored the winner with just over three minutes left in the third period converting a nice drop pass from Jayden Hart on a 3-on-1 break. Gennaro fought off a check from behind the score his third goal of the season. Hart who also resides from the Edmonton area, got the Raiders first goal on a Prince Albert power play about 6-minutes into the second period. Hart now has five goals in the last three games.

Brendan Guhle who also had family and friends in the crowd assisted on Simon Stransky’s second period goal which staked the Raiders to a 3-2 lead after 40-minutes. Reid Gardiner extended his point streak to five games assisting on Stranky’s snipe and Sawyer Lange’s sensational second period snap shot into the top corner.

It took the Raiders about 26-minutes to finally get to Oil King goalie Patrick Dea who made 14 of his 36 saves in the first period. The 17 year old was making his second straight start in place of the injured Tristan Jarry.

Raider goalie Rylan Parenteau made the biggest of his 23 saves midway through the third period robbing Andrew Koep point blank from about five feet outside the crease. Parenteau flashed the trapper after Koep was set up with a behind the back pass by Brett Pollock who had his consecutive game point streak snapped at eight. However Saskatchewan boy Ashton Sautner extended his streak to seven games with a second period slap shot from the point that beat Parenteau high stick side.

The Raiders outshot the Oil Kings 40-26 in a solid hard skating and structured 60-minute effort while going 1/5 on the power play and 3/3 on the penalty kill. The Raiders have killed 33 of the last 35 opponent’s power plays.

They close out the three game road trip Wednesday night in Calgary before returning home to host Brandon Saturday on Teddy Bear toss night.

All Raider games can be heard on 900 CKBI.
