Inquest to examine man’s death after arrest

Nov 24, 2014 | 3:40 PM

The circumstances surrounding a man’s death nearly two years ago will be examined next week at a special inquest.

On November 29th, 2012, Billy Ballantyne was admitted to Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert. While in hospital, he caused a disturbance and police intervened. He was then taken into custody, where he began to have trouble breathing. Police decided to transfer him back to the hospital, where he later died.

Five days have been set aside for the inquest next week at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Prince Albert.

Section 20 of the Coroner’s Act states that the Chief Coroner shall hold an inquest into the death of a person who dies while an inmate at a jail or correctional facility, unless the coroner is satisfied that the person’s death was entirely due to natural causes and was not preventable.
