Captain Morrissey talks about Clouston firing

The Prince Albert Raiders are going through a coaching change, something captain Josh Morrissey knows all too well.

Morrissey is currently in his fourth season with the Raiders and is waiting to see who his fourth Raiders head coach will be.

Cory Clouston was Morrissey’s latest head coach and he was let go by the Raiders on Friday, 15 games into his second year behind the Raiders’ bench.

Bruno Campese was the general manager/head coach in Morrissey’s rookie season in 2011-2012, then relinquished the coaching duties to Steve Young that year. Young’s contract wasn’t renewed after the 2012-2013 season.

“It’s a tough situation to go through. Unfortunately, I’ve gone through it a few times,” said Morrissey. “As players, all we can do is work hard and make sure we’re ready for tonight’s game.

“At the same time for us as players, we have to be able to turn the switch and focus on preparing today and getting ready for the games.”

In Clouston’s tenure, four members of the Raiders have quit the team. This year, overage forward Dakota Conroy, 18-year-old Colton McCarthy and assistant coach Tim Leonard all left the team. Last season, Evan Morden also jetted home.

But instead of having parting shots for his old head coach, Morrissey was sympathetic.

“It’s disappointing in a way, you feel bad for Cory,” said Morrissey. “He has a family, he has a young daughter (three-year-old Skylar) and everything like that. It’s a hard time for him and his family.”

Raiders associate coach Dave Manson will be the head coach on an interim basis, until the Raiders find a permanent replacement.

He’ll coach the Raiders for Friday’s game against the Moose Jaw Warriors.

With all the chaos with this bomb being dropped on the team, they still have to get ready.

“On game day morning, it’s a little bit of an interesting way on finishing off breakfast,” chuckled Morrissey. “As players, we have to be professionals and do our job.”
